Stress on the Beach

Being a full time resident here in Marbella for over a decade, I have learnt that certain restaurants are “keepers” while others are only present to take full advantage of the tourist season and have no interest in client loyalty nor repeat business. It still surprises me that any business can run with this mentality but still they exist and new ones pop up every year on our sunny coast. Although I try and avoid these premises, some of the more established venues have been tainted by this rationale and have slipped into this mind set. One such location is Guayaba Beach Bar – set just right of the San Pedro promenade and next to Bora Bora Beach, This quaint, modest set up was always a favourite of mine, with fresh fish cooked on their beached boat, quick service and a non pompous atmosphere, all complemented by reasonable costs. However, this past summer, its popularity had resulted into a drop in quality and, more over, hospitality!

I have visited a few times this summer and noticed that each time the service was worse, more rushed and almost hostile which was a clear reflection of too few, over-stressed staff and too many tables! Although the standard of food is still good – no frills but fresh and tasty, it took longer and longer to get seated and even longer to get served. With no one waiter serving one section it was chaos and the crux came when a girlfriend I was eating with ordered a creme brulée from the dessert menu and it came as an ice cream. When she questioned the waiter on her order she was met with uncalled-for rudeness – apparently it WAS an creme brulée flavoured ice cream and she should know this although it is not noted on the menu?! Although we were regular customers and a simple apology for the confusion would have sufficed, they were so busy that even the owner was impolite! Shame – I am all up for supporting local hard working businesses but I expect them to treat repeat customers with a little respect. only open for 3 months of the year, I doubt this company will have many regulars this coming summer unless they buck up their ideas!
