Small World, Big Flavours

Everyone needs a friendly local café where you can pop in for a quick breakfast on the way to a meeting, a cup of coffee with friends, an informal lunch or a dinner date. We are so lucky to have some really great eating places on this Coast, but one of our favourites has to be Small World Café. The mood is most definitely relaxed; friendly, smiling waiting staff show you to your table and are also on hand to offer advice about the menu. One of the best things about Small World Café is the portions of quality, fresh, daily produce at low prices and the thing that you can always rely on is great music that plays at just the right volume throughout the day and night. You can stick to the main menu or you can take a sort of culinary detour and go off piste with the wonderful specials menu, which changes daily and features a starter, main course, salad, dessert and drink. The Small World team has the whole portion thing sorted out brilliantly – they realise that customers don’t want to be weighted down with too much food at the beginning of their meal, but neither do they want to feel that they have received too little for their money.  Many of the restaurants on our ‘favourites’ list are Spanish, but the drawback to many of these is that, however delicious the starters and main courses might be, the dessert menu is often disappointing. I mean, we are all fans of crème caramel and even prepackaged ice cream in the summer, but sometimes – especially when the rain starts to fall and the temperature drops – we prefer something with a bit more substance. It is in this department that Small World scores major points. Despite the American inspired treats on offer (Brownie with Hot Chocolate Fudge, Caramel Sauce and Vanilla Ice Cream and Baked, American style Mars Bar Cheesecake with Sticky Caramel Sauce to name but two) we eventually opted for the Hot Apple Crumble with Cinnamon, Banana, Strawberries and Vanilla Ice Cream. This was an old favourite, brought to new life by the imaginative combination of hot and cold ingredients and just what was needed to finish our meal off in style. Sometimes when trying to define the formula behind a winning enterprise we tend to over complicate things, which is something that this extraordinarily successful restaurant has so far avoided. What it does offer is excellent value for money, attention to the tiniest detail, providing a five-star service to an enthusiastically loyal client base by ensuring that Small World remains very much a hands-on business. We anticipate enjoying time at this fantastic restaurant for many years to come.
