Gio’s keeps it simple

Now opened after its annual break, Gio’s is a great meeting place in Nueva Andalucia and, because it is located on the corner opposite the Andalucia Plaza Hotel, very easy to find and park, unless it’s high season when it’s difficult to park anywhere, or Saturday morning when the nearby market is on.

Gio’s is a family affair, with Giovanni Messani himself normally running the show and mother Francesca popping in and helping behind the bar on most mornings. The family used to run the restaurant in the 80s (when it was known as The Garden Bar) and because of this Gio’s has a devoted core of regulars who pop in for a coffee, to catch up on the gossip, browse the English and Spanish papers and catch up with the previous night’s football results on one of the TVs. The staff are exceptionally friendly and with an Italian-Spanish flavour, Gio’s is great for families.

Gio’s features a sunny corner terrace, perfect for soaking up the sun, as well as a covered, air conditioned and  comfortable split level conservatory for inside dining. There is also a lounge area with low leather chairs, great if you want to take advantage of the free wifi and while away a hour or two.

The kitchen is spotless and open plan and although its not the most adventurous of menus, there is enough variety to ensure that both regulars and guests at the hotel across the road make this a regular dining choice.  Highlights are the pizzas, pasta and salads as well as the lamb, steaks and fish. A great, unpretentious, family friendly restaurant.
