Spanish bliss

Almost once a week, my father and I visit a little Spanish chiringuito in Nueva Andalucía, Casa Antonio, serving up fresh local produce daily. This intimate dining haven is a welcome change to the large chain restaurants dotted along the coast, with attentive staff freely recommending delicious dishes and encouraging you to try something new.

There is a tendency for Marbella to feel like you are back in the UK, with branded eateries and shops overpowering the Spanish way of life. However, here you are transported right into the heart of Spain. That doesn’t mean to say that non-Spanish speaking tourists (and residents, we all know who we are!) are alienated from the ordering and recommendation process, as the staff are bilingual and many of the dishes printed in both languages.

Casa Antonio offers both indoor and outdoor dining; the former a warm, cosy restaurant and the exterior terrace overlooks Marbella Golf School, often where small children, smartly dressed, are being taught their first putting lesson by their fathers…absolute bliss.

Each visit, I try to order something different, but I can’t seem to stray away from devouring the ensalada rusa, comprised of diced potatoes, vegetables and fish, bound in a mayonnaise dressing. Honestly, it tastes abundantly better than it looks. Also, the boquerones en vinagre, olive oil and garlic are beautiful; the salty anchovies marinated in the tangy vinaigrette, culminating in an explosion of zest on your palate. An Explore Marbella tip; use the complimentary bread to soak up the remaining oil and garlic pieces, simply divine.

My father usually succumbs to the chicken in curry and pork in tomato sauce. All are homemade by the family run business, with the majority of dishes offered in three sizes; tapas, medium or full, meaning you have total control of your dining experience. They also serve bulging sandwiches and decadent salads, all at extremely low prices.

I would really suggest visiting this, or any, Spanish chiringuito that would normally be out of your comfort zone. Immersing yourself in the culture and way of life is a refreshing change.
