The Cat’s Whiskers

I dined at Alberts a couple of years ago, and encountered a disastrous experience. However, I decided to give it another try to see if it had improved. An institution on the coast, it has recently ‘changed hands’. A fine place to sit and enjoy the views of the Port, and the cuisine was fairly pleasurable, with the leisurely pace of passers-by in this tranquil area setting the scene for a promising experience, but that’s about as far as it goes.

I have a couple of gripes that, for me, are insurmountable. First the cats, some love them and some hate them. I love animals – but not when I’m eating, so as you can well imagine that when three strays prowled the terrace of the restaurant looking for scraps, encouraged by a couple of besotted animal lovers at the next table, my annoyance level hit the roof!

Secondly, the advertised price does not include IVA, an 80’s trick to entice diners with false promotions, mirrored by many other restaurants in the port. This marketing style feels like it’s only for tourists and not for locals. So was it value for money? Frankly no. Good quality food, but I left feeling ripped off.

I hear that the new owners are going to refurbish and update the restaurant; I just hope they keep the style and charm of the place, yet update their antiquated price promotions and animal hygiene rules.
