The best cocktails on the Costa del Sol

Constructed in a manner of an 19th Century sailing boat, Astral Cocktail Bar in Puerto Banus is one of those places where everyone flocks. It’s atmosphere, drink quality and décor is a firm favourite with locals and tourists. Complete with eight-meter mast and sail, timbered seats and tables, wonderfully oversized and reminiscent of the mad hatters tea party in Alice in Wonderland, this boutique bar can accommodate up to 150 people.

It’s best to visit Astral fairly early on in the night, around 10 or 11pm, due to its immense popularity; there is almost always a queue. However, the efficient front of house staff always ascertain a speedy transition from arrival to table. The main bulk of the bar is situated within the sailboat, but when full, there is a garden area available, right on the beach. However, it’s best to wait an extra five minutes for a table in the main seating area, as the garden is lower, doesn’t have the comedy furniture, and is adjacent to the bathrooms, so there is always a lingering smell.

While you wait, you are offered salted popcorn, an excellent ruse to whet your appetite, ready for your impending tipple. The service is friendly, multi-lingual, albeit a little slow, but I afford them of their pace, as on our particular visit on a Saturday night at the beginning of October, the place is buzzing with both young and old. The retro music, played at a tolerant level is perfect background atmosphere for a relaxed but energizing drink, ideal for getting you in the party mood.

Astral is kept at its optimum temperature throughout the summer and winter months. Due to its unique cooling system, clients are sprayed with a mist of water vapour every 30 seconds when the heat is at its maximum. The majority of the terrace is open to the elements, so when the winter months draw in, clients are kept warm by heated lamps.

Most popular are the cocktails, created to order using the finest of liquors. Overflowing with the freshest of fruits, it really is a sight to see. You’re even supplied an empty fruit bowl for the remnant pips and skins. One tip, if you visit Astral after eating dinner, don’t order dessert, as most cocktails are so fruity, rich and filling, they are the perfect (and probably healthier) alternative.
