High Quality and Great Design

San Roque has two 18 hole golf courses: the old and new. Japanese Asahi Kanko, who owned 11 golf courses in Japan, came to Andalucia in 1988 and instantly envisioned the great opportunities in the 136-acre area near Sotogrande. In 1990, the course was officially opened, followed by the San Roque Hotel a year later, and has since been the hotel where players stayed after the Volvo Masters was held at Valderama. Since 1992, the European Challenge Tour final has been held many times at San Roque, along with the annual finals for juniors and the European Tour.

Dave Thomas is the designer of the old Course, who use to be a European Tour player himself. The course is 6134 meters from the yellow and 5174 meters from the red tee. The course is very long and has wide fairways with meandering manicured greens. The first nine holes resemble a forest area with many cork trees and the last nine holes is made difficult by many water hazards. The three most interesting holes are 5, 11 and 18, the signature hole where the player must choose whether to go straight for the green or play it safe. Driver requires a length of 215 meters cary, so many golfers choose to play the hole safely.

The design and quality of the course is in highest range, but the course has some drainage difficulties when it rains heavily.

New Course

We have all been waiting for 40 years with great expectations and anticipation for the sublime course. A wonderful course that is very different and much more challenging than the old course. 6079 meters from the yellow tees and 5010 yards from red tees, the fairways follow the landscape of the course and you do not often get a flat lie, you need to be long of the tee in many place just to reach the fairway, carrying the valleys that make the course very hard and very beautiful, with a very nice landscaping. Hole seven and eight give you a fantastic view, with a lot of water on the former and many bunkers around the green on hole eight. Look forward to the 11th, which is a long par five with an entrance to a very difficult green. The hole is 515 meters long and getting a par here should put a smile on your face.

The pricing at San Roque is a little confusing. The old course costs €160 from 16 / 3 – 31 / 5 in high season, with €75 for the new course; the latter being what the price should be for both courses.

Restaurant

In the heart of the San Roque Club is a wonderful hotel; with room for 200 guest staying overnight and at the center of the resort is one of Spain’s most beautiful clubhouses. The facilities are top class and ideal for European Tour players. In these surroundings, prices are naturally high, but it is reflected in the quality of the produce used. Staff and their service is very professional.

Members and green fee players

There are plenty of opportunities to become a member at San Roque, with eight different types of membership. Diamond, Platinum Contry, Winter / Summer, Resident, Corporate, Junior and Social membership. These can be easily adapted to your wishes, as long you are willing to pay for it. You can choose a membership down to 10 rounds per year, in addition all members have access to use the area’s amenities such as swimming, tennis, gym, sauna, hot tubs and more.

Very exclusive, one to experience, but remember your wallet. A Spanish institution with great traditions.
