Los Naranjos

One of the most popular golf courses on the Costa del Sol is Los Naranjos Golf, situated in Nueva Andalucia.

Los Naranjos is over 30 years old and is one of the oldest golf courses on the coast. Designed by the world famous architect Robert Trent Jones, who debuted in Spain by designing Sotogrande and Las Brisas. They opened in the mid sixties and became so popular that the World Cub, Spanish Open and other major tournaments’ were held on these well-designed courses. Through the seventies, Mijas, Valderrama and Los Naranjos were designed. The owner of Las Brisas wanted a championship course, and owned 70 acres of land adjacent to Las Brisas, so gave Robert Trent Jones free hands to design a championship course. Los Naranjos is a typical Robert Trent Jones course, with wide fairways and large greens. The course opened in 1977 and was run by the same management as Las Brisas.

Both Las Brisas and Los Naranjos were sold in 1982 to the Romero Sauer Group. Las Brisas became a membership course and Naranjos became a pay and play course. A new clubhouse was built and the holes were changed so that hole one is situated to the right of the new clubhouse.

In 1989, the golf course was sold to the Swedish businessman Percy Nilsson. His strategy was to change to a limited membership course with opportunities for green fee guests. The holes were changed and made room for the now famous hole 18, which has a length of more than 500 meters, located directly in front of the clubhouse. Many major golf tournaments have been held at Los Naranjos. The new tees are created using Tifway 419 Bermuda grass, which is very durable. All green bunkers have new drainage and new sand. The course has become 6038 meters from the yellow tee and 5154 from red tee. Several of the holes are a big challenge, Los Naranjos is now a golf course that is difficult but is easy to walk. In 2009, a new driving range was completed with a new large patio at the clubhouse.

Future

Marketing Director Stefan Lindwal says there are plans to improve the course further. They will increase to 600 members, currently at around 200. In addition, they will rebuild the restaurant’s kitchen.

Membership includes unlimited golf, use of locker rooms, wellness center with massage and fitness center. The price of green fee is €88 for 18 holes during high season and €65 in low season, buggy cost €33 and €5 for a trolley.

Environment

Los Naranjos was built in 1977. The name Los Naranjos is not random, a large amount of orange trees surrounds the course, especially hole nine, which is a fantastic sight. Although Nueva Andalucia today is mostly developed, you feel you are playing golf in the country.

Restaurant

The owners run the restaurant itself. It has always been known for excellent food, and have extended their opening hours due to their immense popularity. Breakfast is served from 8am until 11am, Lunch from 11am until 6pm and from 6pm until 10pm for the à la carte. On Sundays, they host a popular buffet which is also served at golf tournaments, all prices are reasonable.

Los Naranjos is for every golfer; hard hitters, safe players, high and low handicaps. I thoroughly enjoy this course and try to bring my five year old daughter as often as I can, as facilities are perfect and we can enjoy a lunch together without spending a fortune.

I would rank this course in my personal top five of courses from Malaga to Gibraltar.
