Located in the Golf Valley in Nueva Andalucia, Aloha Golf Club is one of the most prestigious and long-established golf clubs on the Costa del Sol. One of the truly unique attributes about Aloha Golf Course is its infectious ambiance, a feature that contributes to its rising popularity amongst the elite golf courses along the Costa de Sol. There are few clubs within the area that can proudly proclaim their consistently expanding membership from over 20 different countries.

Aloha Golf Course was the last project by Javier Arana, the prestigious Spanish golf course designer who had previously designed El Saler in Valenica and El Prat in Barcelona. The club opened its doors in October 1975 and during the early years Mr Enrique Canales, an honorary member of the club, added the par three course.  From the beginning Aloha has always been highly involved in the competition scene playing host to several prestigious competitions including the Spanish Amateur Championships in 1978 and the Match Amateur Spain v. England in 1993. Aloha’s proudest moment came during the two consecutive years (2007, 2008) in which they hosted the Andalucían Open (PGA European Tour) attracting participation of the game’s greatest players.

The Course

The course at Aloha is one of the most balanced and strategically designed in the region. The careful selection and location of the trees and bunkers allied with the rough tests even the most skilled players.

The personalization of each hole within the course with its own unique name is what makes Aloha so distinctive, with titles ranging from “Tu Tranquilo,” meaning take it easy for the first hole to  “Vistoso” loosely translated as panoramic view at the eighteenth hole. Designer Arana, receives a well-deserved tribute by having the tenth hole bare his name.

The course comprises of five long holes, (1st, 4th, 10th, 13th, 18th,) where strength and precision are a prerequisite whilst the remaining holes require focus on technique and strategy. My own personal favourite is the par five tenth hole, requiring distance and precision from the tee setting up a fairway wood to a small target for an eagle chance.

The restaurant is operated in conjunction with the renowned Restaurante Cipriano in Puerto Banus, although open to the general public a designated section is reserved for the members.

Facilities include a well-stocked pro shop (soon to be extended,) a beautiful al fresco, terraced club house, two putting greens and a driving range.

Personal Comments

One of the finest courses on this coast for design and condition and don’t forget to check out the dressing rooms, described by golf professional Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano as, “One of the best dressing rooms on the European Tour.”
