Almenara Golf

The conclusion I came to when reviewing this magnificent hotel and golf resort is that it couldn´t really be any better if it tried. Almenara consists of three loops of 9 holes each – a total of 27 holes. The three loops; Los Alconoques, Los Pinos and Los Lagos are all very individual.

Which is the best? I do not know the answer. It’s like asking me to choose between three curvaceous women all with different hair colours. I prefer brunettes, but that´s just my opinion.

This brilliant course was designed by Dave Thomas, the first 18 holes were built in 1998 and the final 9 holes in 2001. The three loops are roughly equal in length; approximatly 5800 meters from the yellow tees and 4900 meters from the red tees.

Almenara golf course, located in Andalusia golf Mecca, is in close proximity to an array of Spain’s most prestigious courses including Valderrama, La Reserva, San Roque and Sotogrande. Almenara´s natural surroundings are very unique, with pines and cork trees as well as two large lakes infiltrating Los Lagos and Los Alconoques.Do not be surprised to see eagles circling above you as you play these two loops.

Many will not pay much more than €100, which is the usual starting point for this exclusive golf valley, with Valderrama at the top with around €260. In my opinion, it is also too expensive, but with Almenara is different. Green-fee price is between €60 and €85 depending on the season. Here you get real value for money and the course is as good as the most expensive ones in the area.

Almenara is not only a golf course, it’s part of the NH hotel. The high standard on the five-star NH hotel is reflected throughout the golf course. Everybody has learned that the customer really is the ultimate priority and everything possible is done to make you feel welcome. When you play the course, you can rest assured that you will not have the interference of staff ¨pushing you along,¨ like you do at some of the neighboring courses. The staff at Valderrama should come here for a lesson in service!
The golf course restaurant entitled VeinTeeOcho (28th hole), lies on top of the clubhouse with a magnificent view of Los Pinos and the mountains around. The restaurant is part of the five-star hotel, which does however mean the prices are high e.g a bottled beer costs 4 Euros and a baguette costs 5 Euros. The restaurant also makes excellent sandwiches, which they will deliver anywhere on the course, a lovely luxury but an expensive one.
If you want to play a golf course without housing developments in the surroundings and without noise instead with stunning scenery and a wonderful wildlife, a very nice layout – Well this is the place to go.
